Health Canada projecting $3-billion spending drop as multiple programs hang in limbo

Reduced spending is attributed to the federal government’s spending review and expiring funding for the national strategy for rare disease drugs, Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy, and for home care and mental health.
Health Minister Marjorie Michel will have to decide whether or not to renew multiple programs that were introduced by the previous Liberal government and are set to expire within the next one to three fiscal years.

Health Canada could see a drop in spending by just over $3-billion over the next three years if multiple programs—including the rare disease drug strategy and the Canadian Drugs and Substances Strategy—begun under the previous Liberal government are not renewed.
