Alberta MPs, Senators call for stricter privacy laws in wake of ‘egregious, horrific’ Alberta data breach

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's government passed amendments to the province's elections laws in 2025, requiring Elections Alberta to have reasonable grounds to believe an offence took place before investigating, which the agency said prohibited them from investigating the data breach when it was first flagged.

Some Alberta parliamentarians are calling for stricter privacy laws after an Alberta Elections data breach exposed the personal data of millions of citizens—including their own—raising considerable safety concerns.
