Lack of civic literacy among Canadians ‘worrying,’ but federal politicians can help, say former MPs

An Abacus Data survey found that a third of Canadian adults don’t recall learning anything about civics in school.
A Jan. 22 poll from Abacus Data suggested that learning about civics is not only linked to voting, but also impacts how Canadians engage in public discourse more broadly.

While education is primarily a provincial responsibility, a “worrying” new poll about a lack of civic literacy among Canadians points to a “whole-of-society” problem, and there is room for federal politicians to play a role in solving it, say experts and former MPs.
