Departmental staffing projections signal ‘pivot to restraint’ in public service, but next budget to be best signal of what’s to come, say experts

A collation of the government’s 2022–23 departmental results reports shows 417,611.4 full-time jobs across the public service during the 2022-23 fiscal year, up from the 399,928.6 positions one year previous. That number is planned to shrink to 399,476.9 during 2023-24, and to 391,449 by 2024-25.
