Small inflation uptick not cause for economic ‘alarm,’ but Liberals ‘remain in trouble’ politically, say observers

Following the May 16 Consumer Price Index report from Statistics Canada, ‘the big story’ remains what Canadians are paying when they buy food or renew their mortgage, said pollster Greg Lyle.
On May 16, following the release of a Consumer Price Index Report which saw inflation on the rise for the first time in months, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland defended her government’s record under questioning from the opposition.

For the governing Liberals, news of an uptick in the inflation rate “crushes their illusion” of being out of the woods politically when it comes to the cost of living, more than it “changes the reality” of their situation, says pollster Greg Lyle.
