Committee report and pre-budget jostling reflect ongoing discord over nuclear energy’s role in Canada’s clean energy transition

Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has said the government is providing direct funding for Small Modular Reactor projects in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan, and his parliamentary secretary announced funding on Feb. 23 to develop manufacturing and fuel supply chains for these projects.

As the nuclear industry looks for the government to “operationalize” earlier initiatives in the upcoming federal budget, environmental advocates say the Liberals and the industry are conflating a climate strategy with an industrial one.
