The government is projecting a swift decline to the federal deficit, but un-costed election promises or first-wave-style COVID supports could pump those numbers back up.

The government will have to find less expensive ways to deal with disruptions caused by the fast-spreading COVID-19 Omicron variant, if it wants to make good on its plan to rein in the deficit, say a current and former parliamentary budget officer.
