Government adds $79-billion to expected spending, pushing annual total to $476-billion, and counting

The government has asked Parliament to approve $21-billion in new spending through the latest supplementary estimates. It says $15-billion of the total is to fight the pandemic.
Treasury Board President Jean-Yves Duclos tabled the supplementary estimates (b) in the House of Commons on Oct. 22. MPs on House committees will now scrutinize the government's request for parliamentary approval of another $21-billion.
The federal government says it needs to spend an additional $79-billion to carry on with its work this year in the global pandemic, pushing its projected tab for 2020-21 to $476-billion, with another round of spending still to be announced later.
