Amidst increasing international competition for a stake in the Arctic, China is investing in long-term infrastructure projects, while Canada is banned from drilling oil due to a five-year moratorium.
Solar and wind power are being touted as possible solutions to energy insecurity in the North.
In a report addressing Canada’s involvement in the Arctic, CEO and chair of the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation Duane Smith described energy insecurity for remote communities in the North as “a cycle of pollution and poverty.”
