Liberal government breaks international ground with registry of prospective voters as young as 14

Bill C-33 proposes that Elections Canada collect data on youth as young as 14 who pre-register to vote. Other countries such as the U.S., France, and New Zealand allow for similar pre-registering, but at a minimum age of 16.
'Over and over, we heard from Canadians that we need to do more to include young people in our democracy,' Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef told reporters after she tabled the Election Act amendments in the House of Commons. 'Yes, Canadian youth voted in large numbers in 2015 than compared to 2011, but we can’t take that for granted,' she added.
