Canada-EU trade deal expected to be signed next month

Full ratification of the deal is in doubt, with entrenched opposition to the investor-state dispute court that was agreed to earlier this year.
Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland and Daniel Costello, Canada's ambassador to the European Union, meet with EU counterparts in April. Ms. Freeland and special envoy Pierre Pettigrew are lobbying European politicians in hopes of securing enough support for the CETA's provisional implementation early next year.
Amid a flurry of protests, legal challenges, and compromises, backers of the Canada-Europe trade deal say they expect it will finally be signed at the Canada-European Union Leaders' Summit at the end of October. But full ratification will be a tougher battle.
