Former Liberal Cabinet minister Lapierre’s death ‘a great loss to political world’

Former Transport minister Jean Lapierre, a TVA political commentator, was killed in an airplane crash March 29. He was 'a kind friend, fine minister, excellent journalist. He took politics seriously but never took himself too seriously,' says Treasury Board President Scott Brison.

Jean Lapierre, who died Tuesday, was first elected to the House of Commons in 1979. He served until 1992 and was re-elected in 2004. During his time in Parliament, Mr. Lapierre served as the Transport minister from 2004 to 2006 under Paul Martin’s government, and previously as the minister of state for fitness, amateur sport and youth. He was also the deputy House leader in 1984 and served in several parliamentary secretary roles.
