Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s renewed appetite to achieve gender equality and his bold statement that being a feminist shouldn’t 'elicit a reaction,' but rather 'a shrug' garnered international praise. Unfortunately, gender equality is not yet an issue we have the privilege to shrug off.
In her UN address on March 15, International Development Minister Marie Claude Bibeau spoke about the importance of enabling women and girls to 'live their lives with dignity, free of coercion, discrimination and violence,' and recognizing that this is not achievable without providing not only education to adolescent girls, but also, vitally, access to contraceptives.
