MP Alexander Canada’s ambassador in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005
Re: “Tory MP Alexander optimistic peace possible in Afghanistan,” (The Hill Times, Sept. 5, p. 1). Thanks for Bea Vongdouangchanh’s interview as background to my book, The Long Way Back: Afghanistan’s Quest for Peace. One clarification: I was Canada’s ambassador from 2003 to 2005 only—for 26 months, to be exact. After that, I was deputy head of the UN mission, known as UNAMA, from 2005 to 2009—for nearly four complete years. All told, I spent six years in Afghanistan.
