Election time: politics and the public service

Between April 1, 2006, and March 31, 2007, the Public Service Commission received 95 requests from people seeking leaves of absence to be candidates in municipal, provincial and federal elections.

Over the past two decades public servants have become increasingly political during federal election campaigns and that has slowly eroded the federal public service's perceived independence and neutrality, says University of Ottawa professor emeritus Gilles Paquet.
