Claiming the second-generation cutoff disproportionally affects Indigenous women and girls dishonours MMIWG+

The actual clause in the Indian Act is gender neutral. If loss of Indian status does lead to greater vulnerability to violence, this would affect all genders, not just women and girls.

Second-generation cutoff needs its own bill, co-developed with First Nations

Senate amendments on Bill S-2 should not be accepted as a solution for all communities. Don’t impose a one-parent rule when First Nations should have the power to enact their own laws on status and band membership.
