Poilievre’s promise to expand seal hunt is dubious politics, bad economics

The days of protests on the ice are over, and the market has spoken. It is not 'eco-nuts,' (as Pierre Poilievre states), who have been critical of this unnecessary practice, but scientists, veterinarians, economists, and global trade experts.

On March 11, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre tweeted a video in which he promises support for an expanded seal hunt to protect salmon and “bring home more jobs” in Newfoundland.

Since 1996, support for Canada’s east coast commercial seal hunt has been the preferred bait for politicians fishing for Newfoundland votes, and 2023 is proving to be no exception.
