As Canada recommits to ending violence against women and girls, Ottawa should stand up for Bilkis Bano

It's inconceivable that Canada is silent while a woman is raped every 17 minutes in India. Canada can't just choose certain women and ignore others. There should never be a day when women like Bilkis Bano have to battle alone.

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly made a public statement recently in support of persecuted women in Iran and Ukraine. To be sure, Ottawa is correct in doing so, but why does it ignore violence against women in countries that we consider to be strong economic and trade partners?The Hill Times photograph by Andrew Meade
