What red line could Putin cross that would result in a forceful response from NATO or the United States?

But how strange it must seem to Ukrainians that the strongest armed forces in the world, the U.S. and NATO, won’t stop Putin’s butchering because it might escalate the conflict. But they would intervene, if Ukraine was part of NATO. Membership in NATO carries many benefits. But so does being a member of the human race.
