An old war over climate change, a new phase

Jonathan Wilkinson wasn’t elected to protect the profits and longevity of oil and gas. He is supposed to be protecting Canadians from the kind of disaster occurring in his own province right now. We’ll soon see if he breaks with tradition, or continues enabling, however indirectly, his new department’s powerful clients.
The Emissions Reduction Fund, as originally conceived, was clearly a Liberal bail-out to oil and gas, dressed up as a win-win; introduced in April 2020, near the start of the pandemic, as a way of addressing soaring unemployment in Alberta while cleaning up the environment.
