Canada doesn’t need its national leaders contributing to untrue conspiracy theories at a time when disinformation and unhinged paranoia on social media have splintered the information universe.

OTTAWA—Late in the English-language leaders’ debate, the Conservatives’ Erin O’Toole decided to inject a bogus conspiracy theory into the chaotic proceedings.
“Mr. Trudeau, Canadians are worried you’re going to be taxing their primary home sales,” O’Toole said to the Liberal leader....
