Government should take an integrated approach to ensure all four research pillars are funded appropriately

If institutional costs are to be funded jointly by federal and provincial governments then first ministers should discuss such matters regularly and develop a national joint funding model.
There are four pillars of research support and all four pillars must be supported appropriately to keep it in balance. If one aspect is not appropriately funded, research will not function well, just like one can manage to sit on a four-legged stool for a while if one of the legs is broken but it is increasing difficult to sustain for a long time, writes Digvir Jayas.
