Scope of USMCA’s new impacts on our food system relatively limited

The biggest impact of the new agreement is with the dairy sector. There are two elements here. The first is that the agreement allows for increased market access (approximately 3.6 per cent in dairy) for U.S. product into Canada.
U.S. President Donald Trump frequently raised Canada’s high tariffs on dairy as unacceptable and this additional access provides an avenue for product to come into Canada at significantly lower tariff levels.
