Caribou need large tracts of intact forest to survive, feds should help this northern jewel

The federal government could foster these solutions by holding firm on their caribou deadlines next spring. It gets even better. Protecting caribou habitat can be part of goal to meet the Aichi Convention on Biodiversity, to conserve at least 17 per cent of lands by 2020.
A caribou grazes. More than 20 forestry companies have committed to work with scientists, conservation groups, and provinces to plan for caribou conservation and protected areas. Weyerhaeuser, for instance, created a management plan for a five-million-acre tenure in Saskatchewan–three-and-a-half times the area of Prince Edward Island—that protects habitat for the Pasquia Bog herd.
