Editorial Staff

Kate Malloy
Editor
Kate Malloy is the veteran editor of The Hill Times. Under her editorial leadership for nearly three decades, The Hill Times has become an award-winning newspaper that blazes trails and breaks exclusive stories in federal politics every week. An Ottawa native and a Carleton University journalism school graduate, Malloy got her first reporting job in 1988 at The Yellowknifer in Yellowknife, N.W.T. She returned to Ottawa a year later and started at The Hill Times in 1989, shortly before the first issue rolled off the presses on Oct. 5, 1989. From a one-person print newsroom, to today’s online and print newsroom of 13, Malloy leads our niche reporting team. She has a good nose for news, but still overuses the word “juicy” in the newsroom. kmalloy@hilltimes.com
Charelle Evelyn
Managing Editor
Forged from a single block of sarcasm, Charelle has been making a go of this journalism game since wrangling a bachelor of journalism from Carleton University in 2008. After a couple of years at Ottawa newspapers, she struck out west in 2011 for parts unknown before returning to the National Capital Region in February 2016 for a position with The Wire Report. Always up for an adventure, Charelle has done a range of unusual things for stories, including jumping into a frozen lake, auditioning for Canadian Idol, going speed-dating at an amusement park, and travelling to Disney World and back in one day. cevelyn@hilltimes.com

Peter was born and raised in Newmarket, Ont., and moved to Ottawa to study journalism at Carleton University. He now lives in Barrhaven with his wife and two children. He is a cancer survivor, a basketball nerd, and a habitual creator of to-do lists. pmazereeuw@hilltimes.com

Chelsea Nash
Deputy Editor
Originally from Barrie, Ont., Ottawa seemed like an exciting big city to Chelsea when she first moved here in 2012 to pursue her Bachelor of Journalism at Carleton University. After completing an internship with The Hill Times in 2016, she landed a staff reporter gig straight out of school. It was an unprecedented year to be starting a career in political journalism: Donald Trump was elected and Britain voted to exit the EU. In order to dig deeper into the meaning of media, Chelsea returned to Carleton in 2018 to pursue her Master of Arts in Communications, where her thesis focused on sex worker organizing in the face of social media censorship. This led her to the labour-centric news site rabble.ca, where she started as a labour beat reporter and eventually became the organization’s lead editor. Looking to get back into political reporting, she rejoined The Hill Times newsroom at the beginning of 2022. cnash@hilltimes.com
Abbas Rana
Assistant Deputy Editor
Abbas reports on the Parliamentary caucuses, nomination contests, party leadership campaigns, Prime Minister’s Office, cabinet, and the Senate. Abbas loves to chat with sources on the record or on a not-for-attribution basis, especially when they have verifiable story tips that could be followed as news stories. Brown envelopes are also always of interest to him. Born and raised in Pakistan, Abbas speaks Punjabi, Urdu, and Hindi. When not chasing politicians down on the Hill, he likes to watch cricket and movies. Email Abbas for news story tips or comments at arana@hilltimes.com or follow him on Twitter @abbas_rana1 arana@hilltimes.com

He was born in Ottawa and raised in Kingston. When not in the newsroom, Neil enjoys reading a good book or talking about The West Wing. nmoss@hilltimes.com
Mike Lapointe
News Reporter
Mike Lapointe joined the The Hill Times in June 2019 and covers the federal public service, deputy ministers, the Privy Council Office, public service unions, the Phoenix pay system, the machinery of government, and the Parliament Hill media. Born and raised in London, Ont., Mike began his journalistic career as a volunteer news reporter at CHRW-FM Radio Western, before heading to Florida as a freelancer to cover state politics and presidential primaries. Following an internship at The Hill Times in the summer of 2013, he headed east to the Telegraph-Journal in Saint John, N.B. Mike enjoys music, podcasts, and old books—and never misses an opportunity for pond hockey in the frigid depths of Ottawa’s winters. Mike has a master’s in political science from Western University and a master’s in journalism from Carleton University. mlapointe@hilltimes.com
Jesse Cnockaert
News Reporter
Jesse Cnockaert was born in London, Ont., and raised in the town of Strathroy. Journalism was in his blood, as his grandfather Ken Campbell had been the longtime owner and editor of his hometown newspaper, The Strathroy Age Dispatch. He held the position from 1960 for the next 30 years. The paper even earned the Gertrude Dunnnig Award for best all-round weekly newspaper in its circulation class in Canada in 1979. In 2007, he earned his print and broadcast diploma in journalism from Humber College in Toronto. Since graduating, Jesse has continued to pursue journalism at the municipal level, covering news in the communities of West Lorne, St. Thomas, and Exeter, which gave him the opportunity to interview Olympians, celebrities such as Rick Mercer and Rachel McAdams, and take a flight in a World War II aircraft before a local air show. jcnockaert@hilltimes.comOnline News
