On June 9, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada would spend and extra $9-billion on defence this fiscal year, to finally reach the military alliance's then-two per cent of GDP spending target.

Canada is ramping up its defence spending, and the Armed Forces could use the extra cash and attention to shore up its operational readiness, staffing shortage, and aging infrastructure, says procurement expert David Perry.
