Former Senator Jack Austin says he hopes his book will serve as a 'reminder of the value of public service as a force for economic progress, social justice, and nation-building, and of the importance of fostering trust and an ability to negotiate differences among Canadians.'

Jack Austin, 91, who retired from the Senate in 2007, came from humble beginnings. Both his paternal and maternal grandparents left Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th century to escape anti-Semitism and came to Canada.
