Louis Riel, pictured, was the founder of the province of Manitoba and political leader of the Métis people of the Prairies, he led two rebellions against the federal government, the Red River Rebellion 1869-1870 and the Northwest Rebellion of 1885. He was hanged for treason on Nov. 16, 1885.
It might be Family Day in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and New Brunswick today, but in Manitoba today, it's Louis Riel Day, Feb. 17. [caption id="attachment_236163" align="alignright" width="211"]
