Local transit, federal lessons

The federal Liberal government plans to spend $11.6-billion on infrastructure over the next five years. Experts say it’s an opportunity for federal legislators to learn from the upheaval in places like the Greater Toronto Area in order to ensure that politics doesn’t trump sound infrastructure investments.

‘There’s always a preponderance for governments to want to fund expansion projects so that you can cut that ribbon, show that new line on a map. While that’s really important … the piece that is always forgotten, which is fairly less sexy, is the state of good repair and maintenance and ongoing upkeep of these systems,’ says Toronto city councillor and Toronto Transit Commission chair Josh Colle.
